A fashion designer specializing in couture dresses and restyling, Maritza Marengo comes from a low-income family in Puerto Rico, where she was the youngest of 6 siblings. She began drawing clothing designs at age 9 and learned to sew doll clothes by hand. She always received unconditional support from her mother, who gave Maritza her first sewing machine at age 16. From that moment on, she began to take seriously what was once a hobby.
After high school Maritza moved to San Juan and pursued a career in fashion design at the Liceo de Arte y Tecnologia, where she graduated Cum Laude. After working in different boutiques and in a bridal salon in San Juan P.R , she decided to move to the continental United States to continue her professional growth.
Maritza was admitted to one of the most prestigious and recognized fashion design institutions in the world, the Fashion Institute of Technology. She graduated Cum Laude as a fashion designer specializing in Haute Couture dresses. While in FIT, Maritza designed an evening dress that was selected to be showcased to the public.
In 2017, Maritza Marengo opened an atelier named Maritza Marengo’s Atelier in Hamden, CT. In which she launched her brand, Maritza Marengo. In 2020 she returned to New York and opened Maritza Marengo’s Atelier & Boutique. After a brief closure, Maritza Marengo’s Atelier has reopened at 48 Mamaroneck Ave., Suite 6, White Plains, New York.
Maritza admires the career of three great exponents of the Haute Couture: Dior, Valentino, and Versace. Her designs are characterized by a classic and sophisticated style but with a particular imprint, especially with the use of lace as a subtle touch of glamour and sensuality. Her designs are aimed at women of any age. For Maritza all bodies and ages have their charm.
In addition to creating collections, she also works on personalized designs, re-styling, and alterations. Above all, for Maritza it is important that even with imperfections every woman feels comfortable with her body, because that security is what she is going to project with the dress she chooses. Maritza Marengo defines fashion as “a way to manifest ourselves through clothing. It represents expression, diversity, and identity.”
